ensure LGBTQI+ inclusion, recognition and awareness in the modern language classroom.
The panel discussion will be preceded by interviews with students who, besides sharing their own experiences in university as members of the LGBTQI+ communities, will ponder a series of key questions on visibility, intersectionality, equality and inclusiveness that will be discussed by the members of the panel.
Likewise, the panel will suggest effective, practical avenues and plans of action as to how universities can pave the way for society at large in terms of inclusiveness and pluralism. These will include the establishment of safe zones, the inclusion of LGBTQI+ topics in the curriculum, the understanding of the different labels used within the LGBTQI+ communities, the relevance of privilege and the wheel of power and control, and the prevention of bullying and discrimination, among others.
Moreover, Jane Traies will be presenting her recent, ground-breaking publication Free to be me (2021), a collection of stories of women seeking asylum in the UK for reasons of their sexual orientation.
