Final reflections on feminism and gender awareness in the translation and language classroom
Alejandro Bolaños García-Escribano (University College London, UK)
BIODATA: Alejandro Bolaños is Lecturer (Teaching) in Audiovisual Translation and Programme Director at University College London (UCL), UK, where he teaches (audiovisual) translation and Spanish language and culture at the School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS-CMII). He holds an MSc in Audiovisual Translation and a PhD in Translation Studies from said School. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) as well as a Member (MCIL) and Chartered Linguist (CL) of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL). His research revolves around cloud subtitling and the latest innovations in audiovisual translation education. He also works as a freelance translator and subtitler in the UK.
ABSTRACT: This e-book has put a particular emphasis on the relevance of feminism and gender in the context of translation and modern languages education. In today’s higher-education institutions, the role played by issues revolving around equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is acquiring an increasing importance. This is why discussions on feminism and gender are highly relevant in the current educational landscape and call for further research from a multidisciplinary approach. This chapter takes stock of the content covered in this e-book from a number of different angles and concludes with some final remarks on the importance of bringing feminism and gender into the equation when it comes to teaching languages and translation in higher education.
