David Stockings is primarily a freelance translator working from French and German to English, specialising in scientific/technical (including medical) and financial translation. He also teaches French and German to English translation as a Lecturer (Teaching) at the UCL Centre for Translation Studies (CenTraS), and holds teaching positions at the University of Westminster and the University of Roehampton. He is interested in how translation graduates transition from qualification to practice and produces Source2Target, a podcast for new and prospective translators
Caiwen Wang is an Associate Professor (Teaching) at UCL and a Senior Lecturer in Translation and Interpreting Studies at the University of Westminster. She has taught scientific and technical translation between English and Chinese for many years and has been a professional translator/interpreter for over 30 years working in a wide range of subject areas including science and technology.
Mariam Aboelezz is a Lecturer in Arabic Translation at the University of Liverpool’s Department of Languages, Cultures and Film. She previously worked as a Lecturer (Teaching) at the UCL Centre for Translation Studies (CenTraS). She has twenty years of experience as an Arabic translator and interpreter and is a certified translator in the United Arab Emirates and a Chartered Linguist in the UK. She has previously taught at Lancaster University and Birkbeck College and has several publications on Arabic Linguistics. Her latest publication is CoronaVirus Lexicon: A Practical Guide for Arabic Learners and Translators (2023).
Nikita Gubankov is a recent graduate from University College London (UCL), holding a BA in History with Spanish and an MSc in Translation and Technology (Scientific, Technical and Medical). Following his graduation, Nikita is currently an Account Executive at Mother Tongue, a global language service provider specialising in transcreation of advertising and marketing material. At Mother Tongue, Nikita manages transcreation, translation and localisation projects and accounts, working with clients in various industries, ranging from medical and healthcare to automotive and food and drink.
ABSTRACT
The translation collaboration between the UCL Centre for Translation Studies (CenTraS) and the UCL-led Rare Dementia Support service (www.raredementiasupport.org) was launched in November 2021. Run as a simulated translation agency, the project offers MA and MSc students at CenTraS a unique opportunity to practise and implement the skills they learn in their translation classes in a ‘real-life’ scenario.
