Didactic Audiovisual Translation: Using Medical Translation to Teach Foreign Languages

BIODATAS
Mar Ogea-Pozo holds a PhD in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Córdoba, Spain. After finishing her Master’s Degree in Audiovisual Translation at ISTRAD, Spain, she worked as a freelance translator for several years. She currently works as a lecturer at the University of Córdoba and focuses her research on audiovisual translation and specialised language in the audiovisual field. She is a member of the research group HUM-940 Oriens and the research group TRADIT. She is chief editor of translation journal Transletters and coordinator of the website TradAV.
Antonio Jesús Tinedo-Rodríguez is an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Córdoba, Spain. He is also an External Collaborator at UNED, Spain. He holds a PhD in Social and Legal Sciences (Education) from the University of Córdoba, Spain, a Master’s Degree in Information Technologies and Communication in Language Education and Processing from UNED, Spain and a Master's Degree in Specialised Translation from the University of Córdoba, Spain. His research focuses on didactic audiovisual translation, and bilingual and intercultural education.
ABSTRACT
As a result of the ever-growing importance of media content – especially for knowledge dissemination, entertainment and education –, audiovisual translation has become a very versatile discipline. A sizable number of studies have focused not only on the current trends and future prospects of the profession, but also on the potential of media localisation practices for the learning of foreign languages and the acquisition of translation competence. Didactic audiovisual translation, hereby understood as the uses and applications of revoicing and subtitling practices in language learning settings, capitalises on the linguistic, pragmatic, cultural and thematic challenges posed by the active use of audiovisual content in
